My relationship with cannabis began in my teens when I was captivated by the beauty and complexity of the plant. However, in 2009, after the birth of my first son, I made a life-changing decision to join the United States Navy. With that commitment came the choice to step away from cannabis in order to serve my country with integrity.
For almost 14 years, I served in the Navy, moving through three different commands and building bonds that will last a lifetime. But in 2020, everything shifted when I experienced my first anxiety-driven seizure. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression, conditions that I manage to this day with daily medication. In 2021, during an ordnance load, I suffered a back injury that would eventually lead to my medical retirement in September of 2023.
Leaving the military was difficult, but it opened the door for me to reconnect with cannabis—this time not just as a means of relaxation but as a way to truly understand the plant’s healing potential. In May of 2024, I was introduced to Homegrown4Heroes (HG4H) by a fellow veteran I served alongside in the Navy. Through HG4H, I didn’t just rediscover cannabis; I found a community and a purpose. I became passionate about learning everything I could about responsible cannabis use, and it quickly became a cornerstone of my journey to healing.
With the incredible support of my wife, Brittany, I transitioned into civilian life and was able to take on new roles within HG4H. I now serve as the Community Outreach Director and Social Media moderator for the organization, roles that allow me to help other veterans find the same support and relief that I have. Cannabis has not only helped me cope with the pain and anxiety that came after my service, but it has also empowered me to engage more fully as a father of three and as a husband.
Today, I am proud to give back to the veteran community through HG4H, helping others discover the benefits of cannabis and fostering a space where we can all heal together. My journey with cannabis has come full circle—from a youthful fascination to a powerful tool for recovery and community building.
