The recognition of the UN is in itself a momentous occasion for hemp. After more than 60 years of negativity and prohibition, the thousands of activists and organizations across the planet that, during the last years, have been lobbying for the legalization of this controversial plant see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Most of the legal issues around hemp started in 1961, with the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which took place at the United Nations. This convention shamefully followed the lead of the United States which had clobbered the hemp industry in the 1930s through prohibition.
However, in recent years, and thanks to the joint effort of hemp activists, organizations, and the world hemp community, the tide has turned for the plant at the highest levels of global governance. The success of these efforts was initially demonstrated last November with the release of the UN Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) paper entitled ‘Commodities at a glance: Special Issue on Industrial Hemp’.
This document was presented at the UN Palais des Nations in Geneva in the first week of February, becoming the first time that the hemp plant and the value of its industry have been discussed in a positive light in a UN building – and with the backing of a UN body itself.
