We are drawing closer to that time of year when you should be considering getting your cannabis seeds started, in preparation for a successful outdoor grow. Springtime is only around the corner, and within the next month or so, you will want to be well prepared and do everything you can to make sure your cannabis seeds have the best start in life.

In this article, I will explain what you need to get started, how often to water your seedlings, their nutritional requirements, and provide my top tips to help you during the germination-to-seedling stage, as well as what to know when planting outdoors in 2026!

What Will You Need to Get Your Cannabis Seedlings Started?

Kick-starting your outdoor grow is an exciting time, and the best part is that you do not need to invest much money to get the ball rolling. Below is a list of all the equipment you will need to accommodate the seedling stage.

When Should I Transplant Germinating Seeds?

If you have decided to germinate your photoperiod or autoflowering cannabis seeds using the paper towel or glass of water method, then you will need to transplant the seeds into your growing medium. The easiest way to do this is to use a pair of tweezers to carefully insert them into a 2cm deep hole in the center of the pot. You must be very careful not to damage or harm the seed in any way during the transplanting stage.

  • Seeds should be transplanted when the taproot is 1-2cm long
  • Transplant inside a well-lit room for better visibility
  • Do not the seeds’ tap root become longer than 3cm
  • Transplanted seeds will sprout out of the soil within 2-3 days
  • Use sticker labels to name and number the different pots and strains

How Often Should You Water Seedlings?

The seedling stage only lasts for 2 weeks; however, during this stage, your cannabis plants are very sensitive to environmental stress. During the seedling stage, the plant is establishing its root system, so it does not need much water.

It is actually better to allow the growing medium to approach dryness before re-saturating again. Cannabis seeds that are overwatered will wilt and slow their growth until soil moisture levels return to normal.

Do Cannabis Seedlings Need Many Nutrients?

You will be happy to hear that they don’t, and that they have plenty of internal nutrients to use up. This does not mean you cannot feed root boosters or liquid nutrients; however, it is best to use a very low ratio and slowly increase over the next 2-4 weeks.

Protecting Outdoor Seedlings

Until your outdoor plants become strong, bushy and robust, you will need to do everything you can to keep the vulnerable seedlings safe. This means protecting them from the threat of insects, birds, cats, or any other animals that may be snooping around.

  • Bring the seedlings in during the nighttime
  • Keep seedlings warm at night indoors
  • Use a pint-sized plastic cup with slits to cover your seedlings

My 5 Top Tips for Outdoor Seedings

Below are my 5 top tips to consider when preparing to start your outdoor grow this year.

Tip #1 – Start Seedlings Indoors

If the climate where you live during Spring is wet, cold and humid, then you may want to consider starting your cannabis seedlings off indoors. Use a CFL or low-powered LED for 2-3 weeks before the weather improves enough to plant them outdoors permanently.

Tip #2 – Careful When Transplanting

When using tweezers, be careful not to damage the taproot. I had many accidents when I was younger, being careless, which resulted in a damaged or snapped tap root. Take your time and make sure that the lighting above the pot is bright enough, so you can see exactly where the seed will be placed.

Tip #3 – Check Seedlings Daily

Once your germinating seedlings reach the stage where they are placed outdoors, they will be exposed to insects and pests. Make a habit of checking the seedlings multiple times per day for any signs of insect damage. Always look closely at the tops and undersides of the leaves, examine the stems and nodes, and keep insecticidal soaps on standby.

Tip #4 – Foliar Spray

If you are concerned that you may be watering too heavily, a safe and reliable way to keep your plants well-saturated is to use a spray bottle. It is also a good idea to buy bottled water or use R/O water to avoid any white chalky residue marks forming on the leaves.

Tip #5 – Label Your Pots

We all love to grow a bunch of different strains, so when you transplant your seeds into the different pots, write a label with the strain name and number. Doing so will prevent any seeds from getting mixed up at the earliest possible stage! If you are growing only one plant and one strain, do not worry about labelling.

Tip #6 – Autos Flower After 4 Weeks

For those who are growing autos outside in 2026, it is important to know that autos have a very short vegetative period of only 4 weeks. So when transplanting germinating autoflowering seeds, it is recommended to use a large-sized pot such as 8 gallon and upwards.
