Northern California Rosin Championship Awards Return August 19th

Last year witnessed the launching of a new and unique contest: the Northern California Rosin Championship. Organizers invited hash artisans to work with the same undisclosed material, stacking their work against friends and colleagues in the community. Working with Healing Herb Farms in Willets, the event handed out 424 grams of fresh frozen cannabis to 28 contestants, who each had to return with 9 grams of solid gold rosin. This year, they’ve returned with another secret strain, double the competitors, and a new category: clone-to-rosin.

NCRC is the brainchild of Byrd Extracts, Mendo Budsmith, and Paul “Pez Bro,” who give every person a month to process and turn in their entries. After that, another month allows for their crack team of 8 hand-selected judges to pour over the blind-jarred entries to select both winners. Skunk spoke with Pez Bro about the event and what made the trio want to do something different and unique for the hash community. “We’ve been told so many other events have a bias, so we wanted to see if we could create a non-biased event for the hashmakers from the hashmakers. A lot of this is Byrd’s idea, but all three of us hopped on board to make it happen, and last year was a success.”

Each division will have 30 makers on the scoreboard, bringing the list to a whopping 60 people competing for two prizes, though they do allow people to enter in both categories. Again, Healing Herb Farms in Willets stepped up, donating the fresh frozen material along with an additional ten clones each to competitors in this new arena who grew the plants and then washed the hash. Since July 15th, their crack team of 8 hand-selected judges has been pouring over the results and seeing who will make the final two winners. Speaking with Paul Pez Bro, he said the team is especially indebted to their intake partners at Healing Herb Farms and sponsors like 3rd Gen Family Farm and Terp Sous-Vide, who make it possible to hold this community cup.

Mendocino’s Real Deal Resin, one of the competitors in fresh frozen-to-rosin this year, spoke about the event, “NCRC does a unique job of highlighting the efficacy of the extractor solely by giving every competitor the same exact starting material. It’s a privilege to put our stamp on Healing Herbs Farms’ finely crafted cultivars.”

Last year, NCRC awards were held at the Mateel Community Center in Garberville. 2023, the announcement ceremonies will happen at Yokayo Ranch in Ukiah. It all goes down Saturday, Aug 19th, from 10 AM to 10 PM, and there is a pool, so attendees are encouraged to bring swimwear. Only 75 General Admission tickets are out for the public, so this will be an exclusive event with Aqua Frescas from Medvets Non-Proft and food vendors, including Terped Out Kitchen (AKA Terped Out Tacos) from Lake County, home of the “cheese-skirt quesadilla.”
