Rev’s Best Growing Tips – Less “Green” Please
From: Tammy Q.
“Hi Rev. I grow around south coast Cali kind of Del Mar zone if you know what I mean. At the end every year I end up having to make a bunch of hash from all my buds because they just all have that way too green flavor and smells. I dry them for over 30 days sometimes indoors with low humidity. What the hell is wrong?”
Rev’s Answer
Hey Tammy. You leave me here with many unknowns. So, for Rev’s best growing tips here, I’m actually going to give you what I think the top three possible reasons are that you are experiencing this “super green” thang.

- Most Likely I think it may be that you are simply harvesting them too early. This always ends up smelling more like lawn clippings than killer weeds. You are very coastal, and humid, this often forces early harvests.
- Too much available nitrogen for your plant later in flowering. You don’t want to have any good available nitrogen source, like blood meal as one example, available to your plant during the second half of flowering, and for sure not for the last 3 weeks of flowering. An overdose of something longer term as well, like feather meal could do this if the overdose was large enough.
- You are not letting your buds dry out enough before sealing them up. This also ends up with the “fresh cut lawn’ smalls and flavors. Get mini hygrometers easy on Amazon and do a test bud in a jar overnight. Seal it up overnight and check the humidity in the morning. 55% or lower and you are good to seal them up. Any higher and I would do some additional drying.

Rev’s Best Growing Tips – Early Plant Sexing?
From: Harold R.
I hope you are well Rev. I was wondering if you could help me with a problem I am having with sexing my plants. I mean, some of my plants show sex and others do not. Is there anything I can do to help me to sex all my plants within their first month?
Rev’s Answer
Yeah Harold, this is very easy and one of Rev’s best growing tips ever. Simply sprout your plants on a 12/12 photoperiod (12 hours light/12 hours dark) for their first 14 days above ground. Then simply change their photoperiod to your normal 16/8 or 18/6 vegetative photoperiod you normally run. If these will be going outdoors then you will want to change to a 15/9 photoperiod after 14 days.
Right around the time they are 30 days old you will easily be able to tell their sex with a magnifying glass no worries. Cool, yeah?

Rev’s Best Growing Tips – My Last 4 Weeks Before Harvest is Rough
From: The Rockman
Rev my man, I know you are recovering now so hopefully you have some reading time and may be able to help me out here. I grow indoors all naturally and my plants absolutely kick ass until about 4 weeks before harvest. They start to die faster than they should, they get very dark green up top with thinner than normal leaves, and growth slows. My yields suck and the smells and flavors aren’t very pronounced either.

I use teas and even add some bone meal to boost them in flowering stage. Do I need to get more phosphorus to them somehow? Thanks Rev, I can’t figure this shit out. Get well soon my friend.
Rev’s Answer
Hey-hey Rockman, thanks, and I’m hanging in there on the recovery. Okay man, pretty sure I know what your problem is here and it’s a simple P (phosphorus) overdose. Bone meal in your tea is a bad mistake and if your plants DID need additional P, just top dress with something like crab meal about 5 weeks before harvest. Potassium (K) is the same thing, don’t add any high K element to your teas, just top dress with a little kelp meal 4 weeks before harvest day. Hope this helps ya bruddah.
Afterword

I'm The Rev, and I have been with SKUNK for well over a decade now. I hail from Southern California, spent mucho time in Northern California, and now reside in Southern Oregon; always coastal. I am an all natural style cannabis grower and I have written a few books on the subject - check out True Living Organics, Druid’s Edition on Amazon - I have been growing for over 50 years, and I have been breeding cannabis for over 30 years. Check out JBC Seeds to see some exotic KOS selections. Growing connoisseur cannabis is what I teach mostly, growing it in living soil without using liquid organic nutrients to feed the plant. I am also a highly skilled synthetics grower, hydroponics, aeroponics, DWC/SWC/NFT, Ebb and Flow, and soilless, but I cringe when smoking synthetic grown herbs, so for the last 20 years or so I preach the artisan style of all natural growing, specializing in container growing. Cheers and welcome aboard.
