Greetings and welcome to another human written (obviously) article by yours truly, The Rev. Over half a century of smoking cannabis has taught me a few things about resin properties, from the obvious differences in the smoking effects, to more subtle differences. I like to isolate the standouts that have their own unique style, like different songs you like to listen to. It depends on your mood, location, etc. The Malawi Moonshine is one of these I really love dearly. The sativa side came shining through in a really uplifting and motivating way for me and for others, as I have heard.
MILF stands for Marijuana I’d Like to Find, FYI 😉 –This variety is a TRUE 4-Way F1 Hybrid. If ya don’t know, or don’t care why that matters, no worries, but if you do know, then you most def care, heh heh. Buckle up, and smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em, because we’re off to the races…

The Rundown—Malawi Moonshine, Yowza!
I found this hybrid to be extremely complex, and wonderful is for sure the right word. Fairly motivational, creative, and uber potent with that “freight train” kind of sativa intensity. The flavors and smells are equally exotic and complex themselves, with notes of vanilla/cream, and orange cream soda as a background to a very butterscotch tongue coating, even with notes of caramel in some. Crazy delicious if you ask me! She’s not a super-fat commercial type yielder, just average to good in that respect, but off the charts for a true connoisseur, I think. Plants are mostly (80%+) uniform, per morphology.

If I am ever at a place, and someone whips out a bud that looks like that (see bud photo with Bic lighter below), it immediately gets my attention bigtime. In my life of cannabis appreciation, the buds that have literally blown my mind, have always looked similar to that bud in the photo with the lighter. Yikes is the word.

P1 Lineage
Male P1 Breeder(s) Deets: The (paternal P1) father is my Cherry Malawi; a hybrid of landrace Malawi I acquired from South Africa over two decades ago (2001-ish) from “Tokestar”, and my old F3 Cherry Bomb out of Hawaii, also acquired over two decades ago. This male brings some serious resistances, vigor, and heartiness to the hybrid; along with massive resin production and high yields. Also, the Cherry Malawi is well known for creeper/intense potency with effects that last several hours easily and imparts exotic honeysuckle/vanilla/cherry terpenes to the whole flavors and smells side of things.
Female P1 Breeder(s) Deets: The (maternal P1) female, KOS’s own Moonshine Skunk; a 2-way hybrid of Deep Chunk and Skunk (Red Russian Skunk) both are long IBL lines with severe goodness across a wide bandwidth. The terpenes are acrid in this hybrid, skunky and honey-oil/fuel with colossal amounts of resin produced on huge stalked trichomes.

The Malawi Moonshine Smoking Insights
I ran two different phenotype female Malawi Moonshine recently. They grew fairly classic sativa style (Christmas Tree) one phenotype had a much higher calyx to leaf ratio, but it also yielded about 10% less. Both shared super exotic flavors that were butterscotch with an orange/citrus background that is sharper, it’s magically delicious. The potency of both was very high, and the ride was intense with that old school “freight train” quality and lasting strong and long—2.5 hours solid peak for me.
The high is the kind that comes on slowly over the course of about 10-15 minutes, then stays solid for at least a couple of hours with a nice dreamy smooth come-down over the course of 50 to 60 minutes or so. This is straight up muse herbs, really complex and creative to the max. Any artists dream-weeds for reals, I think. To me it is very introvertedly oriented, not in a paranoia kind of way, but rather the ride is a serious inward journey, personal, artistic, and reflective. Not truly social, for me.

Not sleepy at all for me, not a heavy munchie-type either, although anything you do eat while under her influence will be amazeballs! She delivers a mean case of red-eye, a good dose of cottonmouth, and damn decent head rushes—be careful standing up fast after smoking! Super happy up high, no paranoia or edginess but still quite motivating. A very nice sativa dominant ride to be sure.
Malawi Moonshine Growing Tips
Different phenotypes/individuals yield better than others. From my observations with a smaller batch of 16 starting plants a couple different times. I found them to be around 50/50 average/good yielding females. The resin production is fairly uniform, and the smells and flavors vary here and there a bit but not by a lot. The larger yielding plants yield about 15% more, so it’s easily noticeable.
Some Grow Bullets for You
- I wouldn’t recommend growing this outdoors along the coast, or where any kind of morning fog or mist is a thing. She may be alright with limited exposure, but I would advise against it.
- She will do extremely well in dry environments and can even handle some hard-core drought stress; and snap back like a champ. She has the Malawi and the Afghani leading the charge here.
- Indoors she does very well, high vigor and strong branching makes her a good candidate for nets when topped. Long colas are pretty sativa like and dense, but solid. Keep her flowering tops below 86 degrees F. to keep her buds dense.
- She does great indoors and outdoors when not topped and develops a mind-blowing apical cola with plenty of side (axial) branch growth as well.
- I would really watch out not to over-water this baybee.
- I would recommend for the maximum complexity of the resin profile to harvest these plants when the resin heads are about 30-35% amber overall, which is just about 10 weeks on the nose.
- If you are an all-natural grower using living soil, you will be fully able to appreciate the complex terpenes here with the butterscotch and the orange citrus background/finish. Ends up with cream soda or orange cream soda with a touch of honeysuckle in your mouth when all is said and done.

Kingdom Organic Seeds Standard Growing Advice
Please do not sprout these on a 24/0 photoperiod and KOS recommends 16/8 for sprouting and until 30 days old. Then switch to 18/6 if you like. Alternately – Using a flowering photoperiod of 12/12 on sprouts for their first 14 days above ground, then switching them to an 18/6 or 16/8 photoperiod will allow you to easily sex them at 30 days of age—give or take 3 days.
Always allow plants to get at least 55 days old from sprouting, before starting to flower for maximum resin production. Plants grown from seed work much better outdoors in the ground than clones do. Alternately, clones work much better in containers than plants from seeds do. Sprout seeds in ambient temps of 75 – 85 deg. F. Obviously KOS always recommends organically growing our gear in living soil for the full appreciation of smells and flavors, among many other reasons—cheers!

Well, Kingdom Organic Seeds (KOS) online is no longer up and running. I may or may not pursue a new main site, but I’m leaning towards not. I am a website/IT moron LoL—yup. So, you may be thinking… “Rev, where do I find these Malawi Moonshine beans?” Glad you asked, check these trusted KOS sources out:

- REvski 😊

I'm The Rev, and I have been with SKUNK for well over a decade now. I hail from Southern California, spent mucho time in Northern California, and now reside in Southern Oregon; always coastal. I am an all natural style cannabis grower and I have written a few books on the subject - check out True Living Organics, Druid’s Edition on Amazon - I have been growing for over 50 years, and I have been breeding cannabis for over 30 years. Check out JBC Seeds to see some exotic KOS selections. Growing connoisseur cannabis is what I teach mostly, growing it in living soil without using liquid organic nutrients to feed the plant. I am also a highly skilled synthetics grower, hydroponics, aeroponics, DWC/SWC/NFT, Ebb and Flow, and soilless, but I cringe when smoking synthetic grown herbs, so for the last 20 years or so I preach the artisan style of all natural growing, specializing in container growing. Cheers and welcome aboard.
