The first month of 2026 marks the start of a new year for beginner-level growers. One of the most important ways to become a great grower is to understand a cannabis plant’s life cycle.
Growing autoflowering cannabis plants indeed teaches you about the plant’s journey from seed to harvest, which is why I recommend them to first-time growers and beginners. In this article, I will explain all you need to know about autos, and why they are a good addition to any grow room!
What Autoflower Cannabis Plants Are
Autoflowering cannabis plants are short-sized hybrids that flower independently without long darkness periods. They do not need to be triggered into flowering by a 12/12 light cycle and can flower after only 4 weeks of growth. Autos possess the Ruderalis gene, allowing them to produce short- to medium-sized plants well adapted to colder climates and optimal for growing outdoors.
- Autos have a short life cycle, ranging from 9 to 12 weeks from seed to harvest
- They can be grown outdoors in a hot climate all year long
- Autos are resilient and tough plants well-suited for colder climates
- The average height of an auto is between 60 and 100 cm tall
- Most seedbanks offer photoperiod and autoflowering genetics
- Can be grown under 18/6 and will flower after 28 days of growth
How They Differ from Photoperiod Plants
- Autos can not be kept in a vegetative state for long
- It is not possible to make an autoflowering mother plant
- Taking clones off autos is not possible, as they start flowering
- Outdoors, autos do not grow taller than 100 cm
- You cannot train autos the same way as photoperiod due to time

Why They Flower Automatically
You would probably be surprised to hear that the autoflowering gene was discovered in Siberia, of all places! Initially found in Siberia, the ruderalis cannabis plant evolved to grow for 4 weeks before automatically inducing flower production due to the cold and harsh climate associated with Siberia, according to 420Seeds.
What the Autoflower Grow Cycle Looks Like
The only thing you have to remember when it comes to growing autos over photoperiods is that you only get a very short window of vegetation. Below is a breakdown of the autoflower grow cycle, with an average harvest time of 11-12 weeks from germination.
- Seedling / Vegetative stage = Week 1-4
- Stretching Period = Week 5-6
- Flowering Period = Week 5 – 12
Why Autoflower Cannabis Plants Are Faster
Autos are easy to grow, very versatile, high-yielding, and do not require much nutrient input during the flowering period. The best thing about autos is that you can have the plants close to harvesting around 11-12 weeks.
What You Need to Grow Autoflower Cannabis Plants At Home
All you need at home to grow autos is a well-ventilated grow space. Grow tents are often the most practical solution for achieving a top-quality grow space. Below is a short list of everything you need to kick-start your career as an autoflowering Jedi. Growing autoflowering plants outdoors, is best recommended for the Summer months.
What Is the Best Indoor Setup for Autoflower Cannabis?
- Grow timer set to 18 hours of light and 6 hours of dark
- HID grow lights such as LED, MH and HPS
- Temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit
- Relative humidity levels should be 50%
- 4-5 Gallon felt pots filled with soil or coco coir
Training, Pruning & Yield Control
One piece of advice I will give you when growing autos at home is to apply plant training to enhance yield. Unlike photoperiods with long vegetative periods, autos are limited in terms of training.
What Training Techniques Work for Autoflower Cannabis?
Not all of the usual plant training techniques can be applied to autos. Based on my experience, the LST method is best suited. It does not affect plant growth in the same way topping or fimming does, and super cropping/stem breaking is risky. It may set the autos back as they fully recover from the high-stress treatment.
My Final Thoughts
Autos are a great way to learn how cannabis plants develop from the seedling stage through vegetative and flowering stages. They only take 85-90 days from seed to harvest, with fast-flowering autos ready within 10 weeks.
Autoflowering cannabis plants are well-suited for growers who are limited by vertical space inside their grow room. You would be amazed at the quality of buds that autos produce. I recommend giving them a go, and you may be very pleasantly surprised!
