Greetings good peeps. You may be wondering what a – That’s Not a Sativa – article is about, yeah? Well, I have been smoking cannabis for over half a century—yikes LoL—and I was lucky enough to be exposed to some of the olden varieties that were insanely deadly back in the days when most of the weeds available to peeps were 4-finger baggies of seeded and stemmy weeds for 10 bucks. That was the only weeds a lot of peeps had any access to. We called it “commercial” weeds.

Real Sativas Always Concentrate Trichomes Inwardly Rather Than Spreading Over Leaves – Who Wants to smoke Leaf

As always, this article is brought to you by humans for humans, no AI used to write any of this, obviously—LoL—I’m just your basic halfway decent grower and ancient head bringing you some information you may not know anything about, just sayin’.

This is What Most Real Sativa Sprouts Resemble
This is What Most Real Sativa Sprouts Resemble

Over the last 15 years or so, I have seen the whole cannabis market basically go to crap due to that old corporate influence/thinking. Of course that is, profit over all else. Fuck that, and fuck them. If you are all about that money in the weed industry, you’re part of the problem. Making money is all good. ALL about the money sucks, that’s my .02 anyways. Everyone’s an “expert” now even though from what I have seen, most of the self-proclaimed pros are average or slightly above average consumers/growers. Maybe I’m delusional, that’s a fair point, I am Mr. Magoo these days after all, heh heh. Let’s get into a little Rev rambling on the subject, shall we?

Sativa Hybrids are Often Awesome and Complex Themselves but That’s Not a Sativa
Sativa Hybrids are Often Awesome and Complex Themselves but That’s Not a Sativa

That’s Not a Sativa, but That Is!

Let me start out by saying this as a hard cold fact… There is nothing else like a powerful sativa for a real deal cannabis experience. By real deal, I basically mean truly complex and full of diverse facets from strain to strain. When you are talking hybrids, even sativa dominant ones often times, while they for sure have certain sativa qualities, that’s not a sativa, no-no-no.

Want a taste of what I am talking about? First, you’ll need to either know a really skilled grower or be one yourself. Really skilled, like skilled in growing heirloom types of sativa. In a nutshell that skill can be summed up with – not over-loving your sativa. She can take care of herself, you need to deeply understand this. Over feeding, overwatering, and over pruning can all be disastrous with an old world sativa. Most peeps trying to grow them end up harvesting them early—a blasphemous thing—due to issues they are having with the longer flowering plants. Consistency, is a “magic” word when talking about the environment for heirloom sativas, in my experience.

A Real Sativa? Well, 99% is Close Enough

The Black Forrest from Kingdom Organic Seeds is a very pureblood (99%) South East Asian sativa, with influences from a few other heirloom Hawaiian sativas. Here she is if you want to try and sample her magic: KOS Black Forrest Sativa at JBC Seeds. This treasure does not come without caveats. She flowers for 16 weeks—yup—and she needs to go AT LEAST 15 weeks in order for you to get an idea of what I be talkin’ about with that WoW factor. Before you can truly appreciate all the wonderful differences in various resin profiles, you need a real example from the heirloom sativa side of things.

Sativas that are indigenous to different regions are themselves quite different from each other. Most people don’t really know about real deal sativas because you actually have to have a decent skill set to grow them properly. They tend not to like powerful feeding, yet often require a lot of nutrition to carry through the longer flowering. Consistent nano feeding is the way, I think. This strategy and others are laid out in my latest book: True Living Organics the Druid’s Edition by Rev. Grab a copy man, you’ll thank me later heh heh. Most growers, fuck up their sativas, knowingly or unknowingly, and rightly think that they suck. It’s just their own fault, not the sativa’s 😉

That’s Not a Sativa, It’s a Wolf

I remember back when I first wrapped my melon around what sativas and indicas were, actually. Thinking about it in terms of dogs. Like… all the different kinds of dogs are basically selectively inbred wolves—basically—are ya with me so far? Wolves are sativas. Dogs are everything else (indicas and hybrids) basically. Real deal sativas are often a farmed heirloom cultivar. Like Red Malawi as one example. But their still all wild child sativa/wolf, just inbred with its own genotype selectively within a very specific environment outdoors. Blue Mountain Jamaican, Rooi Bart, and Chocolate Columbian fall into this category as well along with several others.

There are others, the wildest wolves. Strains like Panama Red, Vietnam Black, and Black Congo as three examples, that are either not influenced by human selection, or mildly influenced—like maybe a cannabis generation or two before you can get the seeds from afar.

Sativa Seeds Can and Often Do Look Highly Exotic Because They Are

Growing sativas I think can be reasonably compared to keeping wolves as pets. You can do it, but there are going to be big differences from having a dog, you savvy?

That Is a Sativa

High energy and sometimes paranoid inducing South East Asian (SEA) sativas are some of my favorites. I don’t get paranoid but I definitely feel the energy torque. Like all sativas other physical, audio, and visual things can be uniquely experienced. Thai is like sativa x sativa hybrids that are selectively inbred, still wolves, but have a higher level of confusion, with slightly narcotic effects. SEA strains like Vietnam Black, or Cambodian, and Haze, normally have high levels of clarity with energy, some would say a dark energy heh heh.

South African sativa like the Durban Poison specifically, is in its own category. Very energetic, a rollercoaster ride where you get extra baked in peaks—LoL. It’s great fun—full of energy, non-paranoid inducing, low munchies, and long lasting (legs) for hours. The trick is finding these seeds not hybridized. Like any good and “true” sativa seed, it has to be 98%+ its original genotype, in my opinion. Any other introduced variety of cannabis besides another pure blood sativa will mess up that whole unique sativa side of things. You don’t want to miss a true sativa experience. It’s not like your “regular” cannabis. Not at all.

Thai, in fact, reminds me of a sativa Trainwreck. Inbred like that (trainwreck style) with several heirloom/landrace sativas. Columbians and Rooi Bart from Africa are very similar to each other, in my experience. They normally have that “buzzing bees” type of audio associated with the high, hahahaha… yup. Lots of energy up front, but a shifting comedown to total relaxation, hard core cottonmouth, and massive munchies. Fun, everything is super extra funny. You have this cool (I like it) sensation of being underwater, or like you have greater density.

That’s Not a Sativa, but Your Next One Might Be!

Maybe try out a Cinderella 99, or a Chunky Cherry Thai, both of these varieties from KOS (Kingdom Organic Seeds) will offer you some true sativa experience, but at least once, you need to try a real deal sativa. Not some seeds you bought online from someone that is saying they’re pure sativa seeds, randomly, for two reasons off the top of my head…

  • REASON 1: A lot of the sativas that are commercially available these days from what I have seen are pretty watered down—potency wise. So, there’s that.
  • REASON 2: Mostly, I would extrapolate from what I have seen and experienced, and from others experiences, 98% of the “sativa” labeled weeds or seeds, are just sativa x indica hybrids with less than 90% sativa present. Often much less—ugh.

This is why I recommend the Black Forrest sativa (link above). She is actually 98%+ sativa, wild ass Vietnamese jungle sativa. She is not only wicked potent—and I mean it, wicked—but, she is also a really decent yielder for a sativa as well.

Did this article end too fast for ya? Want more Rev? Check out this article: A Simple Organic Growing Method by Rev. But hey, really now, all you connoisseur cannabis enthusiasts out there. You should actually try a true sativa at least once, that is grown and dried well, because it will shift how you think about getting high baybee—I guaranfuckintee it! Like a paradyme shift. For a look at a whole bunch of killer exotic hybrids and strains all organically grown and bred, check out Kingdom Organic Seeds at JBC Seeds. Lots of killer variations in resin properties there. I no longer have any association with the old Kingdom Organic Seeds website—FYI.

Welp, I’m outty for now good peeps. See ya back here next time. L8r G8rs…
