The stars always shine brightest in the dark sky at the new moon. We can wish upon a star tonight and bring our desires to light! The most active meteor showers of the year peaked last weekend. But Earth is still passing through the Perseids. We can still catch some streaks of meteors across the night sky right now because there is extra visibility due to the new moon. To lay down on the ground and spend some time looking up at the sky, especially during rare events like an eclipse or a meteor show, is a really good activity to contemplate light and life.

“Each one of us deserves to bask in the sunlight (and moonlight and starlight) and share our bodacious selves, as long as we can also celebrate the beauty in others.” —WeMoon. The “other” is just another reflection of the whole spectrum of humanity. As different as someone may seem from us, we all have our purpose. Tolerance is acceptance. And divergent does not imply incompatible. Separate is sometimes necessary. But equality is imperative. Our institutional othering must stop. Amazing individuals often emerge from the personal traumas of belonging to marginalized groups. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.”—Margaret Mead. Tough times can show us how we can survive and thrive. Seek the beauty, seek the love, seek the light!

Speaking, or seeking, seeing our planet through the lens of cameras shot from space is actually a somewhat new human concept. Proof of our global shape has only been available to view over the past half-century. It should help us realize not only that the concept of flat earth has been debunked but also that, despite our differences, we are all in this together. “In all we do, let us be generous, fair and loving to Spaceship Earth and all its inhabitants. For we’re All-One or None! All-One!” —Emmanuel Bronner. True words expressed on a literal soap box. We are matter, and we matter. Even if our entire planet is barely a speck of dust in the universal context, our synching ourselves up with the sun, moon, and star cycles allows us to encounter the natural flows of our world directly. Everyone on Earth experiences the moon cycles together. We orbit as one. New moon is new moon everywhere at the same time. The same goes for a full moon. And if we are all aware of these cycles, it can bring us closer to each other. The more we know, the more we grow.

Even in the expansiveness, our individuality is purposeful. Life is set up so that each of us has opportunities to bring a unique piece of the puzzle. And in this way, we can involve ourselves in society and connect to the global sphere. If the ultimate goal is peace and love, what do we have to offer?? Our innate talents and our desires and preferences are ours to perfect and share with others. “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” —Pablo Picasso. A life well lived is our intention as Earthlings. That looks different for each of us. And that’s a good thing. Letting our truth shine through is the ultimate way to get our needs met. This new moon lands in the Leo constellation and brings us a burning desire to manifest our ideas in reality. This idea stage is a starting point. Cultivate the positives, celebrate the possibilities, and have the courage to show our brilliance.

What’s new? (Or renewed)?! A new idea, vision, hope, feeling, plan, lover, home, journey, we are even at the beginning of a new school year. We’ve got a ton of planets in retrograde for much of the rest of 2023. Regressive motions allow us time to regroup, and looking back supports beginning again. Hopefully more equipped from our previous experiences. Additionally, in a few days, we are headed into Mercury retrograde for the next few weeks. All of that being said, don’t be afraid to look ahead and get a glimpse of your desires. What is it that would help to create the true you? This particular new moon is a supercharged visionary moment to help us see it. Reignite the fires within to set the groundwork for the new you. There may be some tension, a tug-of-war to the spectrum of our feelings. Like excitement and anxiety at the same time, for example. That’s due to these retro universal planetary forces. But that shows us all the more that the direction we can hold focus on is the way to go. And we can picture it now!!!

Equally important, it’s August, and it’s hot! So, what do we do to keep our cool? How do we handle things when it gets stressful, especially in confrontational and/or uncomfortable situations? Fight or flight or freeze? Finding center and breathing deeply is often easier said than done. And that’s ok. There are many ways to take a break. Take some time out. Take a walk. Take a nap. Take a shower. Take a breath. Take note: take it easy on yourself and others as needed, especially if things do get heated. We are living in chaotic times, and we must remember to use our tools to stay in balance. From that place of balance within, we can help others to do the same when we see they are struggling. For example, as we send our prayers and love and donations to Maui, we know here in Mendo, constant vigilance is needed in our heavily forested terrain. We are very aware of the threat of wildfires and other natural disasters. We do all we can to prepare, hoping in a crisis, it will be enough.

What happening in the garden is a really big transition. Our annual cannabis plants are always grown in the sun and are now moving from the “veg” or vegetative stage to the flowering stage. It’s time to shift our feeding schedule to encourage support for the flowers’ growth. For us, that means it’s a time to focus on de-leafing, taking off the sun leaves, as well as removing some of the lower inside branches. Some folks leave it all there, letting it grow au naturel. But we have found we have a cleaner finish and fewer problems with pests and powder mold when we clean up the plants and give them airflow. Pruning for potency is one of our standard operating procedures. As for the vegetables, it’s an absolutely beautiful and delicious time in the garden with cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, corn, sunflowers, and more ripened and blooming in utter abundance. So many cucumbers, so little time, so we pickle them in order to enjoy the summer fruits all winter long.

“Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night as from cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress.” — Charles Dickens. Though there are surely signs along the way. Let the sun, moon, and stars light it all up. Don’t forget to look up at the sky tonight, make your wish, and then make it come true.
