Even though we are still a couple of weeks away from the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, school’s out, and it already feels like summer. More sunshine. More gardening, More daytime. More road trips, more beach days, more pool time, more popsicles, more fairs and festivals, more, more, more outdoor activities for the whole family!!! A juicy and expansive full moon in Sagittarius ruled by Jupiter is what’s happening in the sky tonight.
“Strawberry Moon: This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June, so the full moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry. However, in Europe, they called it the rose moon.” (Farmer’s Almanac) There are many names for each full moon, depending on the culture and background, and earthly vantage point. June has luscious ones like strawberry moon and rose moons, but my favorite for June is the honeymoon.

The June full moon is sometimes called the mead or honey moon. This is because of the flowering of the earth the month before, in May, so the bees have been busy, and the hives are full of honey. The honey can be fermented and made into mead, a kind of wine, which is a Scandinavian tradition to drink after a wedding ceremony. Weddings are often held in the month of June in honor of Juno, the goddess of sacred contracts. The first month aka moon cycle of marriage is known as the sweetest. And, so, the term honeymoon, is used to describe the blissful retreat from normal duties in celebration of marriage. Now we know why there are so many weddings this month. Love magic!!
Springtime has been filled with flowers and flighty energy. Now it’s getting hot, hot, hot! Let’s do all we can in the name of finding balance amidst the extremes in life. There is too much othering in the world these days when what really needed is more mothering. More nurturing, neutrality, sensitivity, kindness, diplomacy, tolerance, flexibility, openness, excitement, compassion, consideration… We need more open minds. We need more open hearts. Live and Let Live. Full moon intensities can sometimes feel really, really overwhelming. Hold on! No matter what we are going through, we must have the courage to find beauty as this moon shines at this moment. The Serenity Prayer can be used by ALL people in ANY situation: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” (Reinhold Niebuhr)
While we’re all out and about more during this warm weather season, let’s try not to get drawn into a bar fight or other altercations. Getting riled up and stressed out is not helpful. Peaceful protests are paramount. Compassion is an important element of passion. It’s literally the moral higher ground of a genuine ethical attitude toward others. We do not have to agree, but we have to agree to be nice to each other. Humanity would do well to live by The Golden Rule, “Do to others what you would have them do to you,” as is expressed across all of the world’s religions and spiritual traditions. Above all, in the face of the harsh disciplinarian energy in our global relations right now, the more clear our communication, the more success we will have in all types of interactions, from professional to the most personal. Honestly, honesty, honor, and truth, along with some tender loving care, work best in all situations.

In our garden now, just wow, growth is everywhere we look. Flowers are bursting forth in a super bloom. Spring temperatures arrived so late that it was as if we went from winter right into summer, although the past week has been beautiful weather. Not too cold. Not too hot. Just right daytime highs around 70-75 degrees, with cool nights, but warm enough to keep a window cracked open. Sunny and breezy makes life seem easy, even in these chaotic times. Like the bulbs in bloom, it’s perfection, even if only for a moment. Some day we hope to keep bees having hives filled with June Moon honey to share, too.
For now, our cannabis seed babies are growing up so fast. We are continuing springtime chores, fixing water lines, and prepping the garden beds for the next phase of our cannabis plants. And we are eating our bitters and greens; radishes are ready along with lots of arugula, chard, and kale now. Getting organized is our main task while planting out the corn, squash, beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes in the garden. Nettles and or dandelion infusions are good to drink daily now for a spring liver cleanse. Parsley and cilantro are ready to harvest now, too, fortifying for both people and plants. And all the berries and stone fruits seem to be extra sweet so far this year.

We’ve all seen the meme, “Cannabis is the glue holding this shitshow together.” It’s true cannabis can be a soothing balm to our bodies and our minds. As things heat up in the coming days of summer, it may be good to remember it can be an integral part of our first aid kit. For calming nerves. And to calm nerve pain. For calming inflammation. And to calm bellies, too.
Along these lines, another great meme, “Breathe in the good shit. Breathe out the bullshit.” Yes! Breathe deeply and find your center. Focused breathing promotes balance. Get strawberries, roses, and honey today, or the equivalent of what feels sense-ational and sense-ual to you. Sweet talk to yourself and others, reach out; we can all use the soothing breeze of kind words. When we stay true to ourselves and listen to our hearts, we are clear that in the center of our being, we already know the answers we seek. This is another opportunity to open ourselves to universal rhythms. Feel it Fully!

Or, to put it into song (my favorite way to remember things), “Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels, The dizzy dancing way you feel, As every fairy tale comes real… I’ve looked at life that way.” — Both Sides Now, Joni Mitchell. Let’s be kind to ourselves and to each other. We all have innate gifts to share. We can always access a well of hope. Please focus on that place of abundance within and allow those positive vibes to spill out to all in need. Let the bright light of this moon guide you. Live in love.
