I have learned some cool things over the years from Q&A stuff I have read, and I hope it does the same thing for you. Alright earthlings, let’s rock and/or roll with today’s “Letters” to Rev…
Indoor Growing Options, Question #1: Germination for a Noob?
FROM: Andy Dank
“Greets Rev. I’m a longtime smoker and a fan of yours for years and years. I have a growing room all set to go now and some starting soil mix from your newest book all cooked up. My question is, if I am germinating them directly into soil, is it better to use bagged soil, or my TLO soil mix on them to sprout in? My tap water is 49 PPM and pH 7.5, does that sound all good for germinating with? Thanks a million Rev. I totally feel like I’m taking care of small green “childrens,” as you say heheheh.”
Rev’s Answer to Q1
Hey Andy. Yup, I can feel your concern about your green childrens as I read your Q. Your water seems like it is fine, and as long as there’s no chlorine in it, you’re good to go. If there were to be a problem with your water, Arrowhead Spring Water (bottled) works great as an alternative.
Now, regarding your soil choice … I would go with a 50/50 mix of TLO Soil x Bagged Soil … Every now and then I have run across genetics that can’t really handle sprouting in powerful TLO soil well. Of course, all my genetics that have been bred in TLO soil sprout in it just fine. But others have struggled in the past. I like Ocean Forest for bagged soil. It’s inexpensive and works fine. Good luck amigo. Have a blast!
Indoor Growing Options, Question #2: How Many Tents for Two Pounds?
FROM: Johnny M.
“How many tents with 400-watt lights would I need indoors to pull off a grow-op that could get me a couple of pounds? Thank you.”
Rev’s Answer to Q2
Well Johnny, that’s one of those questions that really requires the old—that depends—response. But, with that being said… Using 3×3 foot tents with 400-watt lights and 4 plants per tent, about 2.5 to 3 feet in height, you should get at least 6 or 7 ounces per tent, even if what you are growing is a pretty average yielding variety. A 4×4 foot tent could harvest a pound (with excellent growing skills) and a good larger yielding variety under 400-watt larger footprint LED lights, letting your plants get 3 and a half feet tall and topped. Certainly, you could get 12 ounces fairly easily.
At this point Johnny, I want to express to you some big yield wisdom. Getting larger yields if you are growing all naturally has a lot to do with what you don’t add. Usually peeps screw themselves by overdosing things like phosphorous (P), potassium (K), or even nitrogen (N). Any of these in excess causes not only greatly reduced yields, but hideous smoking qualities as well. Finally, there is an old adage that says more roots equals more buds. It’s true! Larger container sizes will serve you well here. I would flower them in 5-gallon containers. Also, make sure your plants are at least 45 or 50 days old before initiating flowering, and I would use clones for sure. Cheers and good luck.
Indoor Growing Options, Question #3: Smallest Grow?
FROM: Mark
“Hello there Rev. Love the new book! I am one of those guys that isn’t chronic, I smoke maybe a few grams a week. But I am a huge stickler on the quality of that smoke. Synthetic grown is a nonstarter for me just like you. So, my question is, how small can I make my grow? I literally have 50% of a 9’ x 9’ bedroom to work with. How would you do it? Is it even possible? Thank you so much.”
Rev’s Answer to Q3
There’s a lot here I don’t know about your situation Mark, but let’s wing it, shall we? Heh heh… First you need to vent (powered exhaust fan) out a window, or into an attic, or through a wall. If you rent, going through a wall can break your rental agreement. I would first go to my local fabric store, and get some of that “blackout” type fabric that is super lightweight, like felt. You can cover windows with this 100% using just map pins to hold it to the wall over the window. It’s easy to rig a venting duct through this and keep it light tight.
You could fit 2, 3’x3’ grow tents in this space, and I would vent the tents directly by splitting the ducting using a Y-joint. Get an exhaust fan that has adjustable power levels. You can use 300-watt LED lights, but just make sure your lights also have adjustable power levels, like a zoom/dimmer switch. I just got a Mars Hydro 300-watt full spectrum adjustable power LED light for my vegging tent for cheap (under $200.00) on Amazon and it works great.
That gives you the most flexibility Mark. You could just run a single tent if you wanted. You could use a 150-watt LED if you wanted, however, I think if that was something you wanted to do, running the 300-watt on 50% power would be the best choice. Keeps your options open.

I'm The Rev, and I have been with SKUNK for about a decade now. I hail from Southern California, spent mucho time in Northern California, and now reside in Southern Oregon; always coastal. I am an all natural style cannabis grower and I have written a couple books on the subject - check out True Living Organics 2nd Edition on Amazon - I have been growing for over 45 years, and I have been breeding cannabis for over 30 years. Check out kingdomorganicseeds.com to see some exotic selections. Growing connoisseur cannabis is what I teach mostly, growing it in living soil without using liquid organic nutrients to feed the plant. I am also a highly skilled synthetics grower, hydroponics, aeroponics, DWC/SWC/NFT, Ebb and Flow, and soilless, but I cringe when smoking synthetic grown herbs, so for the last 15 years or so I preach the artisan style of all natural growing, specializing in container growing. Cheers and welcome aboard.
